A fitted halter tank that ties behind the neck, fully double layered so it's smooth and supportive enough to wear without a bra. It sits at mid-length, not cropped and not full length, and it's a good first project if you're new to sewing with stretch fabric.

Fabric and materials

You'll need 1 meter (1 yard) of 110cm (44") wide fabric in every size. In 150cm (60") wide fabric, sizes 00 to 8 need 0.5 meters (0.5 yards) and sizes 10 to 18 need 1 meter (1 yard). Use a lightweight to medium weight knit with at least 30 to 40% stretch across the width and good recovery, since the straps carry the weight of the top. I used polyester jersey. Cotton, modal or bamboo jersey, rib knit, interlock or double knit, swim fabric and brushed poly-spandex all work well. I'd avoid rayon or viscose jersey, sweater knits, anything loosely knit, and any woven fabric.

Tools

  • Sewing machine
  • Serger (optional but recommended)
  • Seam ripper
  • Cutting tools (scissors or rotary cutter and cutting mat)
  • Loop turner, chopstick, or small safety pin
  • Hand sewing needle (to close the turning opening)

Notions

  • High quality polyester thread
  • Stretch needle: 70/10 or 80/12
  • 1/4" (6mm) elastic, optional, 28" for size 00 up to 38" for size 18
What makes this pattern special
  • Every raw edge is hidden: the top is sewn right sides together and turned at the end, so nothing shows from the outside and small wobbles in your stitching disappear inside the garment
  • No serger needed: a zig-zag or stretch stitch works anywhere the instructions say to serge, and the finish looks the same either way
  • Double layered: two layers of jersey smooth the body and give enough support to skip a bra
  • Ties adjust: you set the neckline exactly where you want it
  • Optional elastic in the straps: keeps them from stretching out over time, which matters because the straps hold the whole top up
  • Quick to sew: thirteen short steps, and the whole thing comes together in an evening
  • Layered PDF and a glossary: print only the sizes you need, and look up any term you don't know without leaving the file
